The Bookshelf API built Bookshelf out of parts you chose one at a time: a router here, a Zod 44,027 validator there, an error handler you wrote. Nest hands you the same parts already named and already wired — a controller method is a route, a class with @Injectable() is a service, a DTO class is both the validator and the OpenAPI schema. Nothing here does anything Express.js has not already done by hand, which is what lets you price the difference. Nest is a TypeScript framework layered over Express 24,430 (or Fastify 314,116 ), not a replacement for it: middleware order, status codes, bearer tokens and pagination all still apply. Version 12.0.4 of @nestjs/core was published on 21 September 2026 and is what the project below runs on, with Node.js 25.8 2,131 .
