Driver Versus ODM

Mongoose 243,355 is not an alternative to the driver but a layer on top of it: mongoose 9.10.1 depends on mongodb ~7.6, and every query it builds ends up as a driver command. The choice is how much structure you want.

What an ODM adds above the driver, and what it costs
Concern Driver 7.6.0 Mongoose 9.10.1
Schema server-side $jsonSchema declared in code
Casting you convert ids and dates cast to schema types
Types interfaces you write inferred from the schema
Install weight 12 packages 19 packages

Mongoose also brings middleware hooks, virtuals and populate, none of which the driver has. Reach for the plain driver when the work is data engineering: bulk loads, aggregation reporting, migrations, change-stream consumers, or serverless functions where cold-start weight matters. Reach for Mongoose when a long-lived application has many collections and several writers, and you want validation, casting and hooks declared once instead of enforced by convention. Mixing them is legitimate — models for request handling, Model.collection for a nightly bulk job. Mongoose builds that layer.
