Migrating from Bower

Migrating a Legacy Bower Project

Most Bower 80,366 packages are on npm 2,036 under the same name, so migration is mostly mapping, in four steps:

  1. Install the same versions with npm, checking each npm name; Bower-only packages need a Git 1,932 URL.

  2. Update the paths: bower_components/jquery/dist/jquery.min.js becomes node_modules/..., or better, an import that a bundler resolves.

  3. Add a bundler such as Vite 25,978 , which replaces the Grunt 70,395 or Gulp 57,051 tasks that copied bower_components.

  4. Delete bower.json, .bowerrc and bower_components/, and commit the lockfile.

Replacing Bower's install with npm and checking the resultShell
cd ~/v5-ch1/bower-demo && rm -rf node_modules bower_components
npm install jquery@3.7.1 bootstrap@3.4.1
npm ls
Output
npm warn deprecated bootstrap@3.4.1: This version of Bootstrap is no longer supported. ...
added 2 packages in 2s
bower-demo@ /home/dev/v5-ch1/bower-demo
├── bootstrap@3.4.1
└── jquery@3.7.1

The deprecation warning is a bonus Bower never gave: the registry knows Bootstrap 3 2,007 is unsupported, and npm audit now covers both packages. For dozens of Bower packages, the Bower team's 2017 guide suggests bower-away, which rewrites each as a @bower_components/* entry in package.json so the old tree installs as-is, to be replaced with real npm packages one at a time.
