WordPress, originally a blogging system, has become the king of CMS, with its extensive free and commercial plugins (55000+ official and 50000+ non-official, as of 24 Dec 2019) that serve to extend its functionalities. Open-source, it runs on PHP and MySQL.With 81,719,875 downloads at the time of writing, the WooCommerce plugin powers over 28% of all online stores. Multivendor marketplaces have also been built on top of WooCommerce. If you wish to host WordPress on your site, you should download the free WordPress package at wordpress.org (instead of wordpress.com which hosts WordPress for you for free as SaaS).
Wix is notable as it has been gaining popularity very rapidly, partly due to its active online marketing campaigns. Through its drag-and-drop visual editor, it is somewhat easier to use than WordPress, although its plugins repository (a few hundred apps) has not been as established as that of WordPress. The Wix support team is helpful, whereas WordPress does not offer much support, if any, at all. JavaScript and PHP can be used through an extension called Wix Code, which adds new features to Wix:
- databases
- dynamic pages
- repeating layouts
- custom forms
- built-in online IDE
- custom interactions using our APIs
- access to 3rd party APIs
- call backend code from the front-end with Web Modules
- HTTP functions: exposing your site's functionality as a service with your API
Facebook Page has not been included in the list. Nevertheless, with a built-in tinge of social networking and advertisement, it has been used extensively too, as a simple yet effective alternative to these website builders.
