Installing and Configuring AWS CLI v2

AWS CLI v2 24 is a self-contained bundle with its own Python. On Linux x86_64, download https://awscli.amazonaws.com/awscli-exe-linux-x86_64.zip 8 , unzip it and run sudo ./aws/install (--update to upgrade); macOS and Windows have installers. Version 1 (pip 21,050 install awscli) entered maintenance mode on 5 August 2026 and loses support on 15 July 2027. Settings come from command-line options first, then environment variables, then the files ~/.aws/credentials and ~/.aws/config that aws configure writes:

The keys and region come from the variables of awslocal. On real AWS 24 , prefer short-lived credentials (aws configure sso, or the OIDC role of Configuring OIDC Trust for AWS in CI) to access keys in a file. In scripts, pick fields with --query (JMESPath) and --output text, and set AWS_PAGER="" so output never lands in less.
