Warehouses to Fabric

Warehouses, Lakes, Lakehouses, Mesh and Fabric

Five terms dominate architecture discussions, and they answer different questions. The warehouse, the lake and the lakehouse are ways to store analytical data, and each grew out of the previous one's weaknesses. Data mesh is a way to organize the people who own that data, and data fabric is a way to connect data that stays where it is. A company can run a lakehouse, organize it as a mesh and stitch older systems in with fabric tooling all at once, so treat the five as layers of a design, not rival products.
