Installing PHP, Composer, and the Laravel Installer

You need php, composer and laravel on your PATH, plus Node and npm 2,036 for frontend assets. On a server, use the distribution's packages: PHP installed PHP 8.5 and Composer 5,243 on Ubuntu 225 , and Requirements lists the rest. On a laptop, Laravel 2,157 's documentation recommends php.new, one line per platform: /bin/bash -c "$(curl 3,008 -fsSL https://php.new/install/linux/8.5)", with mac or windows in place of linux. It downloads prebuilt binaries into ~/.config/herd-lite/bin and adds that folder to PATH in .bashrc. Run on this machine, it installed Laravel Installer 5.32.0 and PHP 8.5.0 (cli) (built: Nov 20 2025 10:49:10) (NTS x86_64-linux-musl-gcc).

With PHP and Composer already installed, add only the installer, as a global Composer package whose vendor/bin folder must be on your PATH:

Update it now and then with composer global update laravel/installer: new starter kits arrive through it.
