Cloud9 24 was a credentialed terminal plus an editor on a server; each half has a live, free replacement. AWS CloudShell 24 , the icon in the console's top bar, opens a shell signed in as your console identity at no extra charge: Amazon Linux 2023 24 on 1 vCPU and 2 GiB with the AWS CLI 24 , git and Docker 514 , and 1 GB of $HOME per Region (deleted after 120 days unused). Everything else vanishes when the session ends, after 20-30 idle minutes or about 12 hours, and nothing can connect in. Use it for Cost Traps's audits.
VS Code 550 with Remote-SSH is the editor: it installs a small server on the instance over SSH, so the files, terminal and PHP are the instance's own. Add the host to ~/.ssh/config (SSH Config and Jump Hosts) and run Remote-SSH: Connect to Host; the host needs 1 GB of RAM (2 GB recommended). The AWS 24 Toolkit (4.15.0) adds AWS explorers and can open an editor through Systems Manager 24 with port 22 closed. VS Code is not installed on this book's machine, so these were not run:
