Spark 4.2.0 129 (14 July 2026) is the current stable release and the one this chapter runs. It needs Java 17, 21 or 25, Scala 2.13 and Python 3.10 or later; SparkR is deprecated.

From 4.3.0 on, feature releases arrive quarterly and majors yearly; ordinary branches get six months of fixes and the last feature release of each major line is an 18-month LTS, planned as 4.5.0 for 4.x, with Spark 5.0 planned for 2027. Pin the same Spark version on the client (pyspark==4.2.0) and the cluster.
