Installing Git on Windows, macOS and Ubuntu 26.04

On every platform the default package can lag upstream, so check before you install.

Windows. Git for Windows 47,417 (gitforwindows.org (https://gitforwindows.org/ 47,417 )) bundles Git 1,932 , the Git Bash shell, OpenSSH 23,707 and Git Credential Manager 9,326 , and numbers its rebuilds in parentheses: 2.55.0(4) fixed an NTLM hash leak (CVE-2026-62960) and 2.55.0(5) followed on 20 August 2026. winget 26,463 install --id Git.Git --exact works, but on the day of writing winget show --id Git.Git still offered 2.55.0.3, so check it against the project site.

macOS (not run here). Typing git offers Apple's Xcode 10 Command Line Tools, whose "Apple Git" build usually trails upstream. brew 6,457 install git (Homebrew on macOS and Linux) gives the current release.

Ubuntu 26.04 225 . The archive holds Git 2.53.0 for the life of the LTS release; the Git maintainers' PPA tracks upstream:
