Git 1,932 is not a stack of diffs. It is a small database of four kinds of objects (blobs, trees, commits and annotated tags) plus named pointers into it. Build a commit by hand from those parts, in a throwaway objects-lab repository next to your booknest folder, and branching, rebasing and recovery stop being magic.
