Amundsen (https://github.com/amundsen-io/amundsen 4,782 ) (Apache-2.0, about 4,800 stars) came out of Lyft in 2019 as "Google search for data": a Flask 15,439 frontend, a search service over Elasticsearch, a metadata service over Neo4j or Apache Atlas 129 , and a Python databuilder library of ingestion jobs. Its ranking of tables by query counts was copied by every catalog since, and it became an LF AI & Data Foundation project.
Then activity stopped. The last release was databuilder 7.5.1 on 14 August 2024, and on 10 September 2026 the maintainers archived the repository, whose README now opens: "Due to inactivity, this project was archived in September 2026." No fixes, patches or new connectors will follow. Run an existing installation only while you migrate (OpenMetadata 627,669 's Amundsen connector reads its Neo4j store), and before adopting any open-source tool, check its release dates, active maintainers and who pays them.
