Cost Modeling

Cost Modeling for a Small Production Cluster

A cost model starts from requirements, not from price lists. BookNest's production stream needs three replicas on three machines (Sizing Partitions), about 1 MB/s at peak with room to grow a hundredfold, retention of at least a week on the brokers (history goes to the lakehouse), and two or three consumer groups. At that size every offer's throughput and storage meters round to cents, so the bill is the minimum footprint of a three-node, highly available cluster. Aiven's prices below come from its API (demos/ch06/aiven/prices.py), the others from Confluent Cloud in Depth-Aiven, Redpanda and Others, all for 730 hours a month:

A small production Kafka 129 cluster for BookNest, list prices (October 2026; only Aiven's Free plan ran)
Option Footprint Per month
Event Hubs Standard, 1 TU Shared, 7-day retention cap About $22
Aiven Developer (developer-2-1d) 2 nodes on DigitalOcean 553 , 112 GB $35
StreamNative Serverless Usage, ETUs From $73
Google Managed Kafka 3 vCPUs, 12 GiB, 300 GB About $250
Aiven Startup (startup-2, AWS 24 us-east-1) 3 nodes, 2 CPU, 2 GB, 90 GB $265
Confluent Cloud 17,245 Standard Elastic, Confluent 17,245 's estimate About $385
MSK provisioned, 3 x kafka.m7g.large Brokers plus 100 GB About $465
MSK Serverless Cluster-hours plus partitions About $570
Aiven Business (business-4, AWS us-east-1) 3 nodes, 2 CPU, 4 GB, 600 GB $660

The table hides three costs that often decide the real bill. Networking: hyperscaler services charge for data crossing zones and leaving the cloud, while Aiven includes networking within a fair-use policy on classic plans. Extras: managed connectors, a schema registry with governance, stream processing and private networking are priced separately almost everywhere (When Confluent Cloud Fits found they take a governed Confluent setup past $1,000 a month). People: a self-managed three-broker cluster costs only its machines, but someone must patch, monitor, upgrade and be on call for it, which at BookNest's size is the largest cost of all. Compare offers at the footprint you need on day one, plus the extras you will actually use.
