Lens 32,572 made the Kubernetes 5,150 desktop IDE popular: a cluster catalog, resource views, logs and a terminal in one Electron 20,509 window. Its core was open source as OpenLens 4,443 under the MIT license, while the Lens Desktop product added extensions under its own terms. That split ended: the community's OpenLens builds (github.com/MuhammedKalkan/OpenLens) stopped at 6.5.2-366 on 30 June 2023 with the notice "Lens Closed its source code", and the core repository (github.com/lensapp/lens (https://github.com/lensapp/lens 23,236 )) has had no commit since January 2024. Lens is now Lens K8S IDE, sold by Mirantis:

Freelens 5,623 (github.com/freelensapp/freelens (https://github.com/freelensapp/freelens 5,623 ), MIT, about 5,600 stars) continues the OpenLens code; its license still names the "OpenLens Authors" beside the "Freelens Authors". Release 1.10.3 (7 July 2026) ships installers for Windows, macOS and Linux, on arm64 and amd64: winget 26,463 install Freelensapp.Freelens, brew 6,457 install --cask freelens, flatpak install flathub app.freelens.Freelens or snap install freelens --classic. Both are desktop apps and are not run here; point either at the same kubeconfig as kubectl 5,150 . On Windows, copy the kubeconfig out of WSL 6 : kind 14,561 's API server listens on a 127.0.0.1 port, which WSL forwards to the Windows host.
