The Architecture Under the Hood

A WebGPU call in your page never touches the GPU directly. It is serialized, shipped to another process, validated again, translated to Direct3D 12, Vulkan or Metal, and only then handed to the driver. Knowing that path explains most of WebGPU's design: why nearly everything is asynchronous, why errors arrive late, and why the API insists on building state up front. ANGLE traced ANGLE 2,592 's equivalent path for WebGL.
