Shopping, travel and local queries often show product grids, flight boxes or maps instead of ten plain links, so the organic listings start lower. The belief that big brands got a blanket boost dates from the 2009 "Vince" change; Matt Cutts described it as a minor change factoring trust, quality and PageRank into generic queries, not a brand push. Brand and navigational queries behave differently: Google's site diversity system "generally won't show more than two web page listings from the same site", but may show more when "especially relevant", which is why a brand search can return a page of results from one domain.
