Linking Text

Anchor text is confirmed: Brin and Page attached link text to the target page because "anchors often provide more accurate descriptions of web pages than the pages themselves." Google asks for anchors that are "descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant" and uses an image link's alt text as its anchor. Exact-match keyword anchors are a risk: "links with optimized anchor text" in guest posts and press releases are named spam. Weight from the link title attribute is unconfirmed. Pharmacy or casino phrases in Search Console 1 's Top linking text table can signal a hack or spam attack.
