Links from other sites were the raw material of PageRank (Ranking Systems), and Google's ranking systems guide still lists "link analysis systems and PageRank". What has aged badly is the folklore built on that fact. Google now documents which links you must label and which count as spam, and says SpamBrain neutralizes unnatural links.
