An answer engine replies with generated prose that cites web pages, instead of only a list of links. Google runs two such features on its index:
AI Overviews, an AI-written summary above the results, rolled out to all US users in May 2024 and reached more than 200 countries and territories by May 2025. Google reported over 2.5 billion monthly active users in May 2026.
AI Mode, a conversational search for comparisons and multi-step questions, started as a Labs experiment in March 2025 and expanded to over 200 countries and territories in October 2025. It passed 1 billion monthly active users by May 2026, and in July 2026 Google said it had brought AI Overviews and AI Mode "together into one seamless Search experience".
Both may use query fan-out: the model runs many related searches across subtopics and writes an answer from the pages they return. ChatGPT search, Microsoft Copilot 6 and Perplexity are answer engines too. Bing 31 's search team puts the difference plainly: "Search optimizes for likelihood of relevance. Grounding must measure strength of evidence."
What Google documents. There are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode": a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. You "don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup". Traffic from AI features is counted inside the Web search type of Search Console 1 's Performance report. Blocking the Google-Extended token "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search."
What it does not. Google does not explain how pages are chosen for citation beyond eligibility and publishes no click-through figures in its guide, only the claim that these clicks are "higher quality". Any list of "AI Overview ranking factors" is inference.
Besides noindex, the documented controls are the snippet rules: nosnippet and max-snippet also limit use of your text as direct input to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and data-nosnippet hides a span, div or section.
