ARIA for Charts

ARIA Roles, Labels and Descriptions for Charts

A static chart can be one image: role="img" on the <svg>, labeled by a title and a summary sentence. An explorable chart exposes its marks as a role="list" of role="listitem" bars whose aria-label states the data in words. Saved as booknest-a11y.js:

booknest-a11y.js: a ratings chart with ARIA names for every barJavaScript
function accessibleRatings(svg, ratings) {
  const rows = ratings.map(r => ({ ...r.book, n: d3.sum(r.counts),
    mean: d3.sum(r.counts, (c, i) => c * (i + 1)) / d3.sum(r.counts) }))
    .sort((a, b) => b.mean - a.mean);
  const y = d3.scaleBand(rows.map(r => r.title), [0, 150]).padding(0.2);
  const x = d3.scaleLinear([0, 5], [170, 470]);
  svg.attr('role', 'group').attr('aria-labelledby', 'chart-title chart-summary');
  const bars = svg.append('g').attr('role', 'list').attr('aria-label', 'Books by mean rating')
    .selectAll('g').data(rows).join('g').attr('role', 'listitem')
    .attr('aria-label', r => `${r.title}: ${r.mean.toFixed(2)} stars from ${r.n} reviews`)
    .attr('transform', r => `translate(0,${y(r.title)})`);
  bars.append('rect').attr('x', x(0)).attr('width', r => x(r.mean) - x(0))
    .attr('height', y.bandwidth()).attr('fill', r => r.color);
  bars.append('text').attr('x', x(0) - 6).attr('y', y.bandwidth() / 2).attr('dy', '0.35em')
    .attr('text-anchor', 'end').attr('aria-hidden', 'true').text(r => r.title);
  return bars;
}

The page supplies chart-title and chart-summary; visible titles are aria-hidden since labels repeat them. Chrome 1 's accessibility tree (read over the DevTools Protocol) shows a named group with a list of six named items. A data table behind a "Show data" button is the most robust fallback.
