Mike Bostock released D3 18,089 in 2011 as the successor to Protovis, which he built with Jeffrey Heer at Stanford. Version 4 (2016) split it into packages, version 6 (2020) passed events to listeners instead of a global d3.event, and version 7 (2021) ships as pure ES modules.
