d3.tree() is the Reingold-Tilford "tidy" algorithm: parents centered over their children, subtrees packed tightly, each depth on one line. Drawn sideways (swapping x and y), it leaves room for labels, and d3.linkHorizontal() curves the links from root.links():

const root = d3.tree().size([134, 370])(catalogTree(prepareSales(SALES)));
const g = d3.select('svg').append('g').attr('transform', 'translate(70,10)');
g.append('g').attr('fill', 'none').attr('stroke', '#90a4ae').selectAll('path')
.data(root.links()).join('path').attr('d', d3.linkHorizontal().x(d => d.y).y(d => d.x));
const node = g.selectAll('g.node').data(root.descendants()).join('g').attr('class', 'node')
.attr('transform', d => `translate(${d.y},${d.x})`); // x is vertical here
node.append('circle').attr('r', 4).attr('fill', d => d.children ? '#37474f' : d.data.color);
node.append('text').attr('dy', '0.32em').attr('x', d => d.children ? -8 : 8)
.attr('text-anchor', d => d.children ? 'end' : 'start')
.text(d => d.children ? nodeName(d) : `${d.data.title}, ${d.data.author}`);
</script>
nodeSize([dx, dy]) fixes the spacing instead of the extent; d3.cluster() draws a dendrogram.
