If your code matters to the business, the business needs to know when it will be done: marketing, customer commitments and launch events depend on the date. Estimating every feature also forces the conversation about which ones matter, so the nice-to-haves are cut early instead of in a panic before launch. The key word is up-to-date; a plan never revised is fiction.
Today the schedule lives next to the code. Issues are grouped into milestones or sprints, a board in GitHub 29 Projects, Jira 619 or Linear shows work in progress, and the roadmap moves as issues close. Teams that deploy continuously ship small increments and track delivery with the five DORA metrics: change lead time, deployment frequency, failed deployment recovery time, change fail rate and deployment rework rate (dora.dev (https://dora.dev/guides/dora-metrics/ 121,922 )).
