A ShadowGenerator automates Framebuffers and Shadows's two passes for one light: it renders the casters' depth from the light into a square render target, then every receiving material samples it. You choose the map size, list the casters, and flag the receivers:
const left = BookNestStore.createBookcase(scene, 'bookcaseLeft', -1.8);
const books = BookNestStore.placeBooks(scene, left);
const sun = new BABYLON.DirectionalLight('sun', new BABYLON.Vector3(0.2, -0.33, 1), scene);
const shadows = new BABYLON.ShadowGenerator(1024, sun); // a 1024 x 1024 depth map
shadows.addShadowCaster(left); // and, by default, its children
scene.getMeshByName('floor').receiveShadows = true;
const map = shadows.getShadowMap();
console.log(`${map.getSize().width} px, ${map.renderList.length} casters, ` +
`bias ${shadows.bias}`);Output
1024 px, 7 casters, bias 0.00005
The books came along as the bookcase's children. Directional lights use an orthographic map refitted to the casters each frame, spot lights a perspective one, point lights a cube map (six passes). For static scenes, set map.refreshRate = BABYLON.RenderTargetTexture.REFRESHRATE_RENDER_ONCE.
