The Effect and Material Cache

Before drawing a submesh, its material derives defines (DIFFUSE, SHADOW0...) from its properties, the mesh and the lights, and asks for an effect, a program keyed by shader names plus defines, reused if cached:

Fifteen materials, two effects, and a third when a define changesJavaScript
engine.runRenderLoop(() => scene.render());
await scene.whenReadyAsync();
const effects = () => Object.keys(engine._compiledEffects);    // private: for learning only
console.log(`${scene.materials.length} materials, ${effects().length} effects: ` +
  effects().map((key) => key.split('@')[0]).join(', '));
scene.getMaterialByName('walnut').diffuseTexture =
  new BABYLON.Texture('booknest-cover-1.png', scene); // switches DIFFUSE on
await new Promise((resolve) => scene.onAfterRenderObservable.addOnce(resolve));
await scene.whenReadyAsync();
console.log(`${effects().length} effects`);
Output
BJS - [19:19:33]: Babylon.js v9.28.0 - WebGL2 - Parallel shader compilation
15 materials, 2 effects: default+default, pbr+pbr
3 effects

The three StandardMaterials share one program and the six covers another, differing in values, not features (the first key holds 1,452 characters of #defines); the texture compiled a third. Vary materials through uniforms, and enable features at load time: each new combination stalls to compile (Shader Stalls).

The engine's compiled effects listed live: materials sharing one program, and a new texture compiling anotherHTMLLive
