Ambient occlusion darkens creases that ambient light reaches less, the soft shade under a shelf. SSAO2RenderingPipeline estimates it from the depth and normal buffers (filled by the prepass renderer in the color pass): it samples points in a hemisphere around each pixel's normal (samples, 8 by default, within radius), counts those hidden behind the depth buffer, blurs the noise with a bilateral filter and multiplies the result into the frame. Disabling the combine effect shows the raw term:

const camera = new BABYLON.ArcRotateCamera('view', -1.95, 1.35, 1.6, target, scene);

const ssao = new BABYLON.SSAO2RenderingPipeline('ssao', scene, 0.5, [camera]); // half size

scene.postProcessRenderPipelineManager.disableEffectInPipeline('ssao',
ssao.SSAOCombineRenderEffect, camera); // show the term, not the frame
BookNestStore.renderWhenReady(engine, scene, 10);
}
</script>
Contact shadows gather under each board, in the inner corners and between the books. The ratio 0.5 halves the resolution, the usual saving; radius is in scene units, so a room in meters wants tenths, not the default
Being screen-space, the effect only knows what the camera sees.
