Scene Optimizer

The Scene Optimizer and Automatic Degradation

SceneOptimizer watches the frame rate and, while it stays below a target, applies optimizations in priority order, one every trackerDuration milliseconds. The presets (Low, Moderate, HighDegradationAllowed) differ in how far they shrink textures and resolution. Headless Chrome 1 paces frames at 60 per second, so a target of 120 plays the whole sequence on the lit two-bookcase room:

Asking for 120 frames per second and logging each stepJavaScript
const options = BABYLON.SceneOptimizerOptions.ModerateDegradationAllowed(120);   // target fps
options.trackerDuration = 500;                          // check twice a second, not every 2 s
const optimizer = new BABYLON.SceneOptimizer(scene, options);
let steps = 0, last = '';
optimizer.onNewOptimizationAppliedObservable.add((step) => {
  steps++;
  const kind = step.getDescription().replace(/ to [\d.]+$/, '');   // drop the new level
  if (kind !== last) console.log(last = kind); // and skip repeats
});
optimizer.onFailureObservable.add(() => console.log(`gave up after ${steps} steps: ` +
  `${scene.meshes.length} meshes, hardware scaling ${engine.getHardwareScalingLevel()}`));
optimizer.start();
Output
Merging similar meshes together
Turning shadows on/off
Turning lens flares on/off
Turning post-processes on/off
Turning particles on/off
Reducing render target texture size
Turning render targets off
Setting hardware scaling level
gave up after 13 steps: 5 meshes, hardware scaling 2

The first step merged the room into five meshes, breaking per-book picking; the last halved the resolution. Build your own SceneOptimizerOptions(fps, ms) from steps your app tolerates, and use improvement mode (the fourth constructor argument) to restore effects on fast devices.
