Android Toolchain installs each of these, so treat the list as a checklist:
Node.js 2,131 22 or 24 and npm 2,036 (Cordova 129 CLI 13 needs >=20.17.0 || >=22.9.0), then npm install -g cordova.
JDK 17 for cordova-android 15; Capacitor 8 243,123 (Capacitor) also needs JDK 21.
The Android SDK: platform 36, Build-Tools 36.0.0, platform-tools, the emulator and an API 36 image, plus Gradle 19,597 on the PATH.
For iOS, a Mac with Xcode 10 15 or later. This book builds on Linux, so iOS steps are marked "not run here".
Inside a project with Android added, Cordova checks the toolchain for you:
cordova requirementsRequirements check results for android: Java JDK: installed 17.0.20 Android SDK: installed true Android target: installed android-37.0,android-36 Gradle: installed /opt/gradle-9.7.1/bin/gradle
Built unchanged and installed on the book's Android 16 emulator, the same project gives you a first look at a Cordova app: the launch splash screen, then the template page, whose green badge turns on only when Cordova's deviceready event fires.
