An HTML file is plain text. What makes it a web page is the browser's parser, which reads the text as a stream of tags and builds a tree of objects, the Document Object Model (DOM). Every later topic in this book, from CSS selectors to document.querySelector(), works on that tree, so it pays to know exactly how the text becomes nodes, which nestings the standard allows, and what the parser does when your markup breaks the rules.
