React Native Windows and macOS

Microsoft maintains two out-of-tree platforms, renderers that live outside the React Native 36,878 repository: react-native-windows (https://github.com/microsoft/react-native-windows 17,347 ) (MIT, 0.84.0, released 22 September

  1. and react-native-macos (https://github.com/microsoft/react-native-macos 4,386 ) (MIT, 0.81.9, July 2026), a

fork of React Native with a macOS target. Both trail React Native's releases: while this chapter's phones ran 0.86.3, Windows was on 0.84 and macOS on 0.81, so a desktop target pins the whole app to the oldest of the three. On Windows the New Architecture is the default for new projects, and 0.82 removed the old renderer entirely. Microsoft's documentation adds Windows to a Community CLI app with npx react-native init-windows --overwrite and runs it with npx react-native run-windows, which needs Windows with Visual Studio 6 's C++ tools (not run here); the macOS target needs a Mac with Xcode 10 . Expo 6,418 supports neither, so a desktop BookNest would start from the Community CLI (Community CLI) and keep only the modules that have desktop implementations.
