Maestro (https://github.com/mobile-dev-inc/maestro 15,817 ) (Apache 2.0, about 15,800 GitHub 29 stars) is a black-box UI test runner from mobile.dev. It knows nothing about React Native 36,878 : it reads the screen through the platform's automation layer (UiAutomator 234 on Android, XCTest 10 on iOS), finds elements by text or accessibility label, and retries every step against a fresh view hierarchy until it succeeds or times out, which removes most of the sleeps that make UI tests flaky. The CLI needs Java 17 or newer:

Version 2.10.0 was published on 31 August 2026. On this machine, where long curl 3,008 downloads kept arriving corrupted, the same script ran with wget in place of curl. The CLI also runs on Windows, and the Maestro Studio desktop app records flows as you click. The app needs no changes: BookNest's flow ran against the release build of End-to-End Testing with Detox.
